Arc welders are the most used metal fusion processing machines

Arc welding is one of a number of fusion processes used in the joining of metals. An arc welding machine uses the intense heat produced by an electric arc to melt two pieces of metal so that they intermix and form a metallurgical bond

The Principles and Uses of Arc Welding Machines

An electric arc welder creates an electrical arc between an energized circuit feeding a wire electrode and the metal that is being worked on. The arc is produced when the tip of the electrode touches the metal. The electrode is withdrawn, yet still remains in close proximity to the metal and an arc is formed between the two which can produce a temperature of around 3,600 degrees Celsius. The heat from arc welding machine melts the base metal, producing a molten pool which solidifies behind the electrode as it travels along the joint, resulting in a fusion bond. The two pieces of metal may be melted to intermix directly or, more commonly, a filler metal is used. Arc welding machine's electrodes can be a rod or wire that simply conducts the current and is not consumed, or it can melt and itself supply the filler metal to the joint. The latter welding method is most common in the manufacturing of steel products. Metal arc welding results in contamination as metals at high temperatures react chemically with certain elements in the air, and so a shielding gas is used to minimize air/molten metal contact. Gas metal arc welding, commonly called MIG Welder, uses a continuous-feed consumable wire which acts as both electrode and filler metal. With a submerged arc welding machine, the arc is created beneath a layer of flux to protect the weld from contamination. Gas tungsten arc welding, commonly called TIG, uses a non-consumable electrode made of tungsten and the filler metal is fed in separately. It's worth bearing in mind when searching for arc welding equipment that there are a number of other arc welding methods include carbon arc, shielded metal arc, atomic hydrogen, flux-cored arc, stud arc and electro-gas. An inverter arc welder will allow you a certain amount of versatility.
