The History of Tig Welding
The concept of the type of welding in an inert gas atmosphere was first developed in the late 19th century, but the welding of non-ferrous metals such as aluminum remained a problem, as these tend to react with the atmosphere, resulting in poor quality welds. Beginning in the 1930s, inert gases supplied in bottles were used to protect the weld area from contamination, but it was in the aircraft industry that the process was perfected when Russel Meredith created his Heliarc method. This utilised a tungsten electrode arc and helium as a shielding gas, therefore giving rise to the name of tungsten inert gas welding. Today, a tig welding machine is most often used to weld thin stainless steel sections, as well as non-ferrous metals such as copper alloys, magnesium and aluminum. Using a tig welder for aluminum is commonplace in many industries. Nowadays, intelligent welding robots are utilized for TIG/MIG welding of parts.
The Use of the Heat Source in Tig Welding
The tig welding machine process requires three distinctive elements. These are heat, shielding and a filler metal. Heat is produced by a thermal arc tig welder, reaching a temperature of at least 5,000 degrees centigrade, when electricity passes through the tungsten electrode and arcs to the metal. To create this arc a high-frequency generator produces an electric spark forming a conductive path through the shielding gas between the electrode and the workpiece; a distance generally of 1.5 to 3 mm. Once the arc has been established the welding torch is moved slightly in a rotating motion to form a weld pool. While being careful to maintain an ongoing separation between the metal being worked on and the electrode, the welder tilts the torch slightly from vertical so that tig welding wire can be added to the leading edge of the weld pool as required. It requires the use of both hands as the welder manually feeds filler metal into the area being worked on while simultaneously wielding the welding torch. While using tig welders, operators tend to develop a technique whereby they rapidly alternate between adding filler metal and advancing the torch. Tungsten is used for the torch electrode due to its very high melting point; it is not consumed during the welding process.
Filler Metals and Shielding Gases Used with a Tig Welder
Filler metals are used in most tig welding applications, although not always in the welding of some thin materials. They are available in different diameters and are made of different materials. Tig welding gas is used as a shield during the process to protect the welding area from gases such as nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere as these can cause weld defects such as porosity, brittleness and fusion problems if they make contact with the weld pool, arc or electrode. A shielding gas also serves other functions during the tig welding process as it transfers heat from the tig welding wire to the metal and assists in creating a stable arc. Argon is the most commonly used shielding gas as, when used with alternating current, it results in a high weld quality that also looks good. Helium is also commonly used, along with argon-helium mixtures. An inverter tig welder power source can be used for a big tig welder.
Used Tig Welders at Second Hand Market
If you are looking for a fair tig welding machine price, it is possible to purchase a full size or portable tig welder, small tig welder, tig welding gas or any other tig welder from varuous brands such as Hobart; in fact, anything to do with the tig welding process at used tig welder auctions. If you are looking for a cheap tig welder for sale or the best tig welder at a reasonable price, then your best bet is to check out what's available at auction, which you can do with great ease and convenience online. As with most welding machines and equipment, new tig welders can prove to be expensive, so to find a tig welding machine for sale at a price that is low and affordable, this is your best option. Due to the robust nature of tig welding equipment, used tig welders will still give you years of faithful service.
